Every photo you compress is a small trade-off between file size and visual quality. Get it right and no one notices; get it wrong and you end up with muddy skin tones, blocky skies, or text that turns to mush. Here's how to actually think about that trade-off, rather than just dragging a quality slider and hoping.
Most everyday photos contain far more visual information than the human eye needs to perceive them as "sharp." Formats like JPEG and WebP exploit this by discarding detail that's least noticeable — subtle color gradients, high-frequency texture, and areas outside your immediate focus — while keeping the structure that your eye actually locks onto, like edges and contrast.
That's why a photo can often shrink from 4MB to 400KB with almost no visible difference, while the last 10% of size reduction is where quality loss becomes obvious. The goal isn't the smallest possible file — it's the smallest file before quality loss becomes visible.

Downscaling a photo's dimensions removes far more data than compression alone — do both if the image will only ever be viewed small.
Judge quality at actual size, not zoomed in — most artifacts that look bad at 400% zoom are invisible in normal use.
Re-saving an already-compressed JPEG at a lower quality setting repeatedly ("generation loss") compounds artifacts each time. Where possible, always compress from the original, uncompressed source rather than an already-shrunk copy. Similarly, resizing an image up (making it larger than its original dimensions) will never add real detail back — it just stretches existing pixels and often introduces blur.
Page load speed, email attachment limits, and storage quotas are the usual reasons to compress. For web use specifically, smaller images mean faster page loads, which affects both user experience and, for site owners, search ranking. For email, most providers cap attachments around 20–25MB total, so a handful of compressed photos travel far more reliably than raw camera originals.
